Tourist Places to Visit in Chamba

Chamba is the northwestern district of Himachal Pradesh, in India. It is located on the banks of river Ravi at an altitude of 1,006 metres. There are many places to visit in Chamba, which is also one of the most loved tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. The city is situated between the majestic Himalayas and is surrounded by snow-clad mountains and serenity all around. Apart from scenic beauty, Chamba is also famous for its 18th century architectural pieces like Laxmi Narayan temple, Hari Rai temple, Rang Mahal and many more.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular wildlife sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh, which is spread over 30.69 square km and is located amidst the deodar forest between Khajjiar and Dalhousie. If you are a hiking enthusiast, there can be no better way to go to the wildlife sanctuary than walking from the natural vegetation. Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is the home of diverse range of wild animals, which include barking goral, jackal, langur, serow, leopard, Himalayan black marten, deer, bear, and many more.

Bharmour-“The Abode of Shiva”

Bharmour was the ancient capital of Chamba District. As the whole country around Bharmour is supposed to belong to lord Shiva, it is popularly spoken of as Shiva Bhumi, "Abode of Lord Shiva". It lies between the Pir-Panjal and Dhauladhar range. Bharmour is popular for its natural beauty, Apple, Chaurasi(84) temples and Manimahesh. Chaurasi Temples stand on a level area in centre of Bharmour and are named after the 84 Siddhas who are believed to have meditated in here over thousand years ago.

Chamera Dam

Built up on the River Ravi, the Chamera dam is situated in the Chamba district, making it one of the most important places to visit in Chamba. Chamera lake is the reservoir of the dam where the water level may rise up to 763 meters during rainy season and 747 meters during summers.
Chamera Dam is one of the major source of electricity generation in this region and generates around 540 MW of electricity. One of the most unique features of the place is the contrasting difference between the morning and night temperature. In the morning, temperature may rise up to 35 degree celsius.

Manimahesh Kailash Peak

Manimahesh Kailash Peak- Manimahesh Lake

The lake is situated at an altitude of 13,000 feet in the foot of Kailash Peak (18564ft.). It has high religious significance. The lake is a major pilgrimage trek, which is carried out during the months of August and September on the eighth day of new moon period, and is known as 'Manimahesh Yatra.' Lord Shiva is believed to reside in Kailash Peak. A rock formation in the shape of a Shivling on Kailash is considered to be the manifestation of Lord Shiva. Kailash is considered as invincible.

Inaugurated on September 14, 1908, Bhuri Singh Museum is one of the major tourist destinations not only in Chamba but in whole Himachal Pradesh.
House of more than 8,500 antique pieces, Bhuri Singh Museum features costumes, arms, coins, royal jewellery, Basohli painting, rare Sharda script, carved doors, copper plate grants, memorial stones, musical instruments, frescoes, Guler-Kangra paintings and many more.

Akhand Chandi Palace

Akhand Chandi Palace displays the lavishness of Mughals and the artistic architecture of the British. It is a perfect blend of western and eastern architecture and was built in the year 1748-1764. While visiting the Akhand Chandi Palace, you can have a picturesque view of various other beautiful tourist destinations like Chamunda Devi Temple, Sui Mata Temple, Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Rang Mahal and many more.
One of the most beautiful features of the palace is that it has distinguishably green roof as the other houses in Chamba along with a conical roof to shed the snow.

Champavati Temple

Located in middle of the city is one of the most religious places to visit in Chamba. It was built by Raja Sahil Varman in the memory of Champavati who was her daughter. The temple's Shikhara style and various ornamental stone carvings make it distinguishable from others. It resembles the architectural pieces of Nepal, featuring structures that are cylindrical in shape and are categorized into 5 to 9 parts. The temple holds the shrines of Vasuki Naga, Wazir and Goddess Mahisasuramardini, an avatar of Goddess Durga.

The Lakshmi Narayan Temple is one of the oldest and largest temple in Chamba, which was built in around 11th century by Raja Sahil Verma. The complex of Lakshmi Narayan temple has around six temples in total, all dedicated to either Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu. The history says that the idol of Lord Vishnu in this temple was made of a rare marble, which was imported from Vindhyachal Mountains apart from the six main temples; there are three more temples in the complex, namely Radha Krishna Temple, Gauri Shankar Temple, and Shiva Temple of chandragupta.

Saach Pass

One of the most magnificent treks in Himachal is the ‘Sach Pass’. Sach Pass is situated in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas at the 4,414-metre above sea level and the feeling of being on top of the world is beyond words. It connects the Chamba with picturesque Pangi Valley. There are many waterfalls along this route, as well as extremely dangerous roads. The pass remains open for only 2-3 months during the summer. This trek not even give you the pleasure of scaling the peak but also give you a chance to explore the hidden cultural of small villages and beautiful temples. A perfect destination for nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers.

Dainkund Peak, Dalhousie

Dainkund in Dalhousie region is a place worth visiting, thanks to its beautiful snow covered peaks and lush green surroundings that attract many tourists every year to this stunning place. Dainkund is the highest peak in Dalhousie and gets maximum snowfall during the winter season. There is a motorable road that leads to this hill, but one can also choose to trek this distance as the views are really astonishing here. This whole stretch is full of natural beauty that gives a completely different experience to the guests.

The town of Dalhousie has derived its name after the British General, Lord Dalhousie. He was the Governor-General of India and has established this place as a summer Capital. Dalhousie is a high-altitude town spread across 5 hills near the Dhauladhar mountain range in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Dalhousie is famous for colonial-era buildings, including St. Francis and St. John’s churches. Snowfall is quite a common feature here, which adds up to the bitter cold in the town.

Jot

Jot is a hidden treasure in Himachal Pradesh. If you want some place away from hassle of Shimla and Manali, Jot is the place to be. Jot is a very good spot for solo travellers or someone looking to spend a romantic weekend with your special one.
You can reach Jot by taking a bus from Khajjiar. I was at Khajjiar and decided to go to Chamba. The bus route to Chamba goes through Jot. The bus stops at Jot for a small refreshment break.
